That fire keeps burning! Hearth returns for Issue 2: Passages
Starting right on the heels of Issue 1, we took some time to set up our online store and website during our writing period for Issue 2. It was the first time that communications had to go completely digital as each of us were enjoying our summers in foreign countries. The weekly in-person meetings ended, and as Hearth went international, keeping up with everything became much more difficult. Despite this, we persevered. As Priya copyedited in Portugal, Conor wrote his piece in Vietnam. As Elena took stunning photos in Spain, Aisling was creating social media schedules in France. As Eoin designed layouts in Hungary, Charlotte was catching monkeys on paper in Greece.
We suppose it was fitting that the theme was Passages. However, as you’ll see, Passages are not found solely in travelling. Whether it be the passage from life to death, from childhood to adulthood, through cultures or the way light travels, every potential meaning of Passages was captured by our amazing contributing writers and artists. We want to give a big thank you to our dear friend Nicole Go who did an incredible job with the cover art for this issue—we cannot thank her enough. That goes for all of our artists and photographers included in this issue. Though we often focus on the literary aspects of our magazine, there is no Hearth without the artists. With every issue, we are more and more astounded by the quality of work that people share with us. We highly encourage you to follow these artists on their social media accounts and support their work as one can only guess what they will do next.
It is important that we talk about our contributing writers for a moment. The selection process is always the hardest part of our job as the quality is so high. With this in mind, we guarantee that every piece is extremely special to us. We want to give a special thank you to our featured writer for this issue, Kevin Power. It is a tremendous honour to publish a short story from such a talented Irish author; especially one as spectacular as ‘The Mental Health Benefits of Moderate Exercise.’ As with Issue 1, we all know we will tell our grandchildren of the unforgettable work we have been given the opportunity to publish.

We hope you enjoy the accompanying playlist as you read these stellar pieces.
There will be a longer gap before Issue 3’s release but you can still keep up with Hearth by checking out our Substack or following the Instagram.
Hearth runs on the support you—our beautiful readers—give us. We do it all for you!
